My kids say weird things in Florida. We've lived in Florida a little over a year. I thought my kids would love it but my kids are continually underhandedly complaining about living here. Just this morning...
14 year old: "Hey Momma, is anyone going to die this year?"
Me: "WHAT?"
14 year old: "Well, if they live somewhere else and they die this year we may be able to go somewhere with cooler weather."
It is Oct 2nd and it is going to be 87 degrees today.

20 years from now
"I hope the only difference between me now and me 20 years from now is that I know more stuff. Also, I want to be taller."

Chess Players for President
Jonathan (13 yrs) "Instead of a presidential election, they should just have a chess match."
Momma: "Do you think winning at chess is a good indication of a good president?"
Jonathan: "Well, there would be a lot less wars."

Black Friday
David: "What is Black Friday?"
Jonathan: "It is the day after Amercians spend a day being thankful for all that they have, when they trample each other for things they don't need."

Haircuts
On Saturday, the boys got haircuts.
Jonathan
"Why did you choose this haircut?"
"I don't have to brush it and it is so short, I won't have to get another haircut for a while."
David
"Why did you choose this haircut?"
"Um, well... I like it. I did decide to get it a little shorter this time."
Thomas
"Why did you choose this haircut?"
"It's my style!"
[laughter]

Getting older
Jonathan is 11 today.
One sure sign that he is getting older-
Every year since he was old enough to make a request, he requested pizza for his birthday dinner.
This year, he requested steak.

The Owen Boys Rock
We are extremely proud of how our boys are doing in school this year.
This quarter-
Jonathan was one of 2 kids in his class to get straight A's.
He also had perfect attendance.
David received a character award for his class. (Two are chosen from each class during each quarter.) His teacher said that he is a great teacher, always willing to help other students. He does amazing work on classwork, especially his projects.
He also had perfect attendance.
Thomas received a character award for his class. His teacher said that he is a great friend in class and that he is always the first to help clean up, even when the mess isn't his responsibility. He is a hard worker and is excelling in reading.
We are super proud of our boys.

Funny Things Kids Say: Taste Bugs and Artificial Sponsers
The other night at dinner, Thomas said, "I think my taste bugs are changing."
We all laughed lightheartedly and told him that he meant taste "buds" not taste "bugs."
Jonathan piped in with, "No, it's buds. Like, Bud Light, the artificial sponsor of the super bowl."
Thomas laughed and said he had always thought it was taste bugs.
We laughed and explained artificial verses official.

Jonathan Basketball, Game 1
Jonathan had his first basketball game on Wednesday. It was the first game of his season. It was his first game ever.
His age group is 5th and 6th graders.
Warming up before the game.
Sitting out during the first quarter.
Waiting to go in to play.
Playin' Ball
Final score 20-10. Jonathan's team lost by 10.
Game memorable moments:
Jonathan's determined, happy face at halftime when he came to get his water bottle. He was having a great time.
The unplanned break when one kid vomited. The players stood around, not sure how to react.
Jonathan said, "He had too much fruit to eat." I said, "Ew, is that what you saw?" He said, "No, that's what the coach said (after cleaning it up)."
I am proud of Jonathan. He played hard and had a good time. I am impressed with his effort and enthusiasm. It takes strength to start a sport when many of the other players have been playing for years.

2 Awards, 1 Super Happy Jonathan
The kids had an awards assembly today at school. Jonathan received two awards.
His first award was for participating in the Regional Battle of the Books competition. This was the first year a team from our school has participated. He did a fantastic job.
Getting the Battle of the Books Certificate:
His second award was for being the March Student of the month. Jonathan looks forward to getting this award every year. This year, it was getting harder and harder for him not to get it each month.
He was really happy to get the certificate today:
Getting his Student of the Month picture taken:
Today was hat day at school. (As part of a fundraiser, the kids could pay 50 cents to wear a hat.) Jonathan didn't say anything to me but I know he is thrilled to be wearing his Ducks hat in his picture.
Getting a high five from his teacher:
I decided to treat him for his awards. I offered to pick up a treat after school, suggesting special kid treats like milkshakes or slurpees. Jonathan asked if I could buy watermelon. Oh, how I love that boy. Since it's too early for watermelon, we opted for cantaloupe.
I am proud of Jonathan for working hard at school. This has been a great year for him.

Monopoly Wisdom
Jonathan has convinced his brothers to play Monopoly with him.
Overheard as Jonathan set up the game:
"Life is like Monopoly. You need to be careful with your money. If you spend all of your money, then you don't have any money and you are out of money."

Soccer Sludge Practice
He said it was the best practice ever.

I am so glad he wore that white shirt. He purposely rolled in mud.
Honestly, what coach lets the boys throw mud at each other after practice? Oh right, my husband- his dad- is the coach.
Just so you know, the picture doesn't do those muddy black socks justice...they were muuuudy.
